I bring to you today’s contributions for Seven Question Beer Sunday (part 13) from @captainasshat (aka Matt) and @abrasivecraftbeer (aka Mark). Matt is not only an asshat but he is also a Masshole. You read that correctly! If you live in the state of Massachusetts, where Matt is from, you are affectionally called a Masshole. Mostly by other Massholes. It’s a Masshole thing!
I am sure there is a moniker for residents of Michigan. The only one I am familiar with are those that live in the Upper Peninsula called Yoopers. Judging by the postal address from the box of beer I received from Mark, he is not a Yooper. If you ever met someone from Michigan, they always do this hand thing, while pointing to it with the other hand, when describing where they are located. Best thing ever!
Both Matt and Mark are awesome beer peeps that help push the craft beer community needle to the right. Matt has a heart bigger than two people combined and always willing to share his opinion. Mark has an affinity for craft beer, will trade any Michigan beer at a moment’s notice and is quick to get it out the door!
I hope you enjoy their responses as much as I did. Now back to trying to shape my hand to form the state of Massachusetts without offending someone 😏
Cheers beer friends 🍻

- What is your name and location?
The notorious M.A.T or Matty P. from the south shore of Massachusetts (sorry I’d give more but I like a little anonymity). - What is your day job? I am a road guy for a coffee distribution company.
- Where can we find you on the socials including Untapp’d?
Instagram – @captainasshat - Want to plug your side hustle? Saturday night Instagram show with @commonmanbrewreview when we can both fit it into our weekend, also something creative/artsy coming soon keep an eye out on the gram.
1 – Ever been to a Meadery and if yes, which one?
No, never traveled to one but I’ve had friends that belong to a south shore homebrew club that loves to make mead probably more than beer & the mead was incredible and strong as hell too, probably some of the best stuff you’ll never get to try again.
Anything creative, cooking, drawing, painting, music. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 14 or 15, I still suck though, lol! Actually, the painting & music has been put to the side due to a creative block, the side hustle that’s coming hopefully will help break it and I can get back to doing something more interesting than watching movies.
- Got Hops glass (shameless plug) (editor note: awwwe 💗)
- Baby Yoda tumbler cause baby Yoda makes everything better “this is the way.
- BHZ bamboozled by hops glass it was a limited production glass designed by my friend Chris who was the head brewer at the time.
- Small Change glass cause Mike & Emily rock and I love supporting their brewery.
- Gilded Skull glass which was a gift from Neil the owner after meeting up and sharing a couple beers with him, great guy.
- Firefly hollow glass I’ve become friends with the crew there and its special because its some distance & when I can get back there its a great day filled with laughs with good people and good beer
4 – Farthest you traveled from home to visit a brewery?
I haven’t really traveled that far, few reasons mainly I’m solo so that adds a few concerns, for a while it was also money, getting caught up on a lot of bills I wanted to get rid of, and then also I’m spoiled, there are so many great breweries just on the south shore it’s hard to leave then just outside the area a ton more…..so I guess the farthest I’ve traveled is western Connecticut. I love to visit the gang at Firefly, they make me feel at home.
I LOVE THIS QUESTION !!!! This is so easy to answer, back in the early 90’s the was a brewery out of Tx, called Pete’s Wicked, their flagship was Pete’s Wicked Ale which was a contender and right next to on the shelf with Sam Adams, Harpoon, Anchor (all the big players in micro-brews at the time). Every summer Pete’s would release their summer beer Pete’s Wicked Strawberry Blonde. It was sooo good, easy drinking, crushable and as a beer, with a hint of fruit, it wasn’t overbearing or fake tasting. When Pete’s sold the brewery it was a sad day at my casa. I’ve been chasing this beer for years, no decades now, and haven’t found a suitable replacement 🙁
(editor note: Pete’s Wicked Ale was a go-to along with Sam Adams lager, back in the day)
Hell no! I’ve done it a couple of times and it’s annoying. If I’m buying beer and have to wait longer than a few minutes I’m leaving. There’s no reason, we have so many great breweries in this state where I don’t have to wait that are on par with the “hype factories”. I’ll just go somewhere else to get beer. If it’s taking forever and a day to get a pint, oh you better look out cause I’m moody AF and I love calling places out on social media. Yes, I’m an a**hat! LOL, at least I know it, many don’t!
So I’m stuck in the line at Tree House and someone rolls by with 8 cases, what’s going through my head? That it’s some high-level BS right there cause the guy can’t drink it all and is probably going to resell it online (I hate those people). If it’s not for trades, he/she might be buying for someone or many people but still, it’s crap, cause the other people in line are going to get screwed because people like that blow out something you want. I believe in 4 pack & case limits (I know there’s an argument there, and I don’t care). I just see greed so I have a strong feeling about it and defiantly NOT afraid to say something, call the person out to their face, you’re going to be an ass, I can too.

- What is your name and location?
My name is Mark Earl and I live in Corunna, Michigan - What is your day job?
Assistant Superintendent in a Wastewater Treatment Plant keeping the waters of the Great Lakes State clean! - Where can we find you on the socials including Untapp’d?
@abrasivecraftbeer on IG
@abrasivecraft on Untappd - Want to plug your side hustle?
Not really a hustle but on the side, I do some nuisance animal removal usually beavers.
1 – The world is ending and you can only choose one to drink; Keystone Premium, Natty Light, Bud Ice?
The world must be ending if those are my only choices! If I had to pick one, I guess it would be the Natty Light.
2 – Tell us about the most odd but interesting tasting beer you ever had?
The Abyss from Deschutes Brewery was an adventure in flavors that almost needed a roadmap. It was the 2012 vintage that I had.
3 – How many bottles of beer are in your barrel-aged collection?
I have a little over 100 barrel-aged beers in the collection but not all are in bottles. Some of these are in 16 oz cans.
4 – If you could get a tattoo of any brewery logo, what brewery would it be and where would you place it?
I only have one tattoo so I am not likely to do that. If I wanted to show support for one of my favorite breweries that way, I would probably pick Ascension Brewing Company. (The source of the legendary Gorilla Juice Stouts.) I would put it on my left shoulder.
5 – Your go-to snack while having a beer and why?
When I am out, I would say it’s pizza because of course, it’s pizza! At home I have popcorn.
6 – How long have you stood in line to get beer and was it worth the wait?
I will start by saying that line shares have been amazing here in Michigan and I have met great friends and had great times. I once waited in line for 24 hours and it was absolutely worth it. No Rules is an amazing beer from Perrin Brewing and it is released once each year. The beer is somewhat themed after the Big Lebowski and the first person in line gets a bowling ball signed by the Perrin Brewing brewers. The first 10 people get a signed bowling pin. There is a little competition to be the first in line! Someday I’ll tell you about this epic experience over a beer of course.
(editor note: I wish we could have line shares in Massachusetts)
7 – Ever drink an IPA twelve months past its born-on date and if yes how did it taste?
I have had many old IPA’s and NEIPA’s. I once shared an M-43 more than two years old with the staff at Old Nation during the annual mug club party. It was close to barley wine and still drinkable to me. I have a Pineapple-Jalapeno M-43 in my beer fridge now from September of 2019. They are still tasting good.
